pop and toast - the practice

Established in 2018, Pop & Toast first gained recognition through her bold interpretations of bottles. Beneath their recognisable imagery lies an interest in how objects become markers of identity, aspiration and personal history. This enquiry continues across a varied practice, with each collection offering a different perspective rather than a single stylistic direction.

In her portraiture, the relationship between what is revealed and what is withheld becomes central. Expression, posture and the suggestion of a figure invite the viewer to imagine a life beyond the image. Her still-life compositions turn towards the social world: a laid table, patterned fabric or the remnants of a gathering suggest narratives extending beyond the canvas.

Landscape offers another way to explore the relationship between observation and interpretation. Sketchbook drawings provide a starting point for reconsidering a scene, allowing selected details to take precedence over a literal account of it.

Research into historical and contemporary painting supports these different strands. Recent experiments in abstraction introduce a further enquiry into the possibilities of paint, existing alongside her figurative work within an open and evolving studio practice.

Alongside her collections, Pop & Toast creates private commissions and develops creative collaborations. Each begins with a conversation, translating a personal brief into an original work through her artistic interpretation.
